Department

The Site Geleen encompasses 7 plants, including 2 Naphtha crackers, a Logistics unit, a
Polypropylene and 2 Polyethylene units. The Naphtha crackers produce amongst others ethylene and propylene which are mainly used as feedstock for the successive poly-olefins plants. Our polyethylene product range includes all of the commodity thermoplastic polymers, linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), low density polyethylene (LDPE), and high density polyethylene (HOPE). The polypropylene product range includes block copolymer and specialty automotive grades.
On the site we have operational units, which are based on the PMT-model (Plant Operation, Maintenance and Technical). Plant Operation is responsible for a safe and maximum production within the defined Safety Health & Environment/ License to Operate goals. Maintenance is responsible for specification, scheduling and execution of the activities in the plant. The Technical department is responsible for the right suggestions and support to improve the production and maintenance processes, including process integrity, safety and legislation. The cross-functional Plant Improvement Team (which includes Plant Operation, Maintenance and Technical) identifies, selects and allocates resources to deliver a balanced portfolio of plant improvement opportunities that add the greatest value and focus on the most important activities. The purpose is to obtain strong functional teams to improve plant operation, reliability and sustainability.
Part of Technical is the Static and Standardization Group. This Department provides specialist expertise service to all departments to ensure technical integrity and technical risk management for the SABIC Plants Site Geleen.

Job Purpose & Responsibilities

  • As a Materials and Corrosion Engineer you will be the focal point with respect of all corrosion related issues and you will provide in-house materials and corrosion engineering consulting to all departments including Maintenance, Technical, Projects and Process Operations, such as:
  • Recommending the most suitable material of construction for new chemical process units,
    debottlenecks, expansions or modifications.
  • Defining corrosion control systems and recommending advanced corrosion monitoring methods
    for new and existing chemical process units.
  • One of the main Focal Area’s of the material and Corrosion Engineer is support of all Plants with regard to cooling water treatment.
  • Initiating, and or supervising or guidance of material and equipment failure analysis consisting of
    both on-site and laboratory investigations.
  • Proposes and implements innovative materials technology solutions and materials/ fabrication
    standards that advance the state of the art and improve plant reliability
  • You will participate in RCA or FMEA's in order to make informed decisions and opinions
    The Materials and Corrosion Engineer will also be required to mentor developing engineers and
    represent the company in external organization’s and committees.

Requirements

Education & Training

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science or related field is required in (petro)chemical or energy industry.

Experience

  • Substantial experience and knowledge with materials selection, corrosion mechanisms and with
    equipment failure analysis in (petro-)chemical or energy industry.
  • Substantial accumulated knowledge and skills in corrosion control methods (e.g. materials
    selection, equipment design etc.)
  • Knowledge non-metallic materials and coatings is preferred
  • Show awareness of Asset Life Assessment and Maintenance activities and/or Inspection Strategies in place to ensure continued Operational Integrity of both Plant and Equipment. Strong drive for continuous development of (inter-)personal competencies;
  • Strong drive for continuous improvement
  • Excellent communication and engagement skills
  • Ability to speak both Dutch and English with proficiency level
