Legal Counsel Compliance

Department

SABIC’s global Legal Affairs department consists of over 100 in-house lawyers world-wide and is structured on a regional basis with global functional legal support. The Legal Affairs department for the region Europe currently consists of twelve counsels located in Sittard (The Netherlands), Bergen op Zoom (The Netherlands) and Wilton (UK) and is responsible for the provision of legal support to all of SABIC’s activities in/out of Europe.
As a result of the structural increase in legal-compliance work in Europe, a new Legal Counsel Compliance position has been added to the Legal team in Europe.

Job Purpose & Responsibilities

As Legal Counsel Compliance, you will support the Senior Legal Manager International Trade, Compliance and Antitrust in Europe (Senior Legal Manager) in managing SABIC’s ethics and compliance program in Europe and globally. Apart from managing compliance systems you will (co-)develop, update and document ethics and compliance policies and communications, and support a robust integrity culture through drafting communications and designing/delivering trainings on compliance-related and culture-behavioral topics.

An important part of your job responsibilities will consist of coordinating and leading compliance investigations, in close collaboration with the Senior Legal Manager and the global Legal-Compliance team. You will act as a go-to counsel for the European organization, next to the Senior Legal Manager and participate in projects or other European or global initiatives as a representative of the Compliance Function. You will be responsible for proper compliance case data management and will be requested to prepare internal reports on trends and analysis for European leadership or the global Compliance Function. When required, you will interact with external authorities.

Your scope of work will be diverse and bring you in close contact with the various businesses and other departments within SABIC in Europe and in other regions. You will report to the Senior Legal Manager.

Requirements

• Minimum 3-5 years of experience in building and maintaining a compliance/ethics program as an in-house counsel and/or in private practice in an international setting..
• Business oriented personality
• Preference for a European Masters law degree
• High level of integrity; strong compliance focus and knowledge of legal/ regulatory environment
• Strong analytical skills;
• Experience with compliance case data management tools, compliance investigations and compliance reporting is preferred;
• Strong verbal and writing communication and presentation skills;
• Proficiency in the English language (which is the working language within SABIC) is a must; Knowledge of one or more other languages, in particular Dutch, French, German, is a plus;
• A strong, yet flexible personality that is able to operate in a multi-cultural and multi-jurisdictional environment;
• A can-do, no-nonsense attitude with a pragmatic and common sense approach
