Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry Senior Scientist

The Global Analytical Science team is part of the SABIC Corporate Technology and Innovation (T&I) organization, with three locations in Europe. The European team (~30 FTEs) provides analytical characterization expertise to support T&I programs across Strategic Business Units. The Analytical Science Laboratories are well equipped with an extensive array of modern analytical techniques in the area of advanced chromatography, spectroscopy, elemental analysis, morphology / microscopy.

We are looking for a highly skilled analytical professional with demonstrated expertise in odor & volatiles analysis using Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry. The incumbent’s broad knowledge and experience in instrumental analysis may also be applied to other research questions as needed. SABIC focus areas relevant for this position include materials for automotive interiors, mixed plastic waste, and food contact applications.

JOB PURPOSE:

You will help drive our analytical technical strategy by developing competencies in Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry, specifically related to odor & volatiles compound analyses. Additionally, you anticipate the needs and questions of your colleagues in the fields of TruCircle™, Polymers and Chemicals developments.

You provide analytical solutions to complex, real-life problems including material development applications, cracker feedstock characterization and investigation of fouling. Furthermore, you will develop external links with research institutes and universities in the area of CHROM-MS designed to enhance our internal knowledge and capabilities in key focus areas.

You will have the opportunity to drive analytical competency projects within multifunctional SABIC project teams. Equipment in scope of this position includes direct insertion probe (accurate mass) MS and advanced GCMS techniques including 2D-GCMS. In addition, the lab is equipped with a variety of sample introduction techniques such as liquid and gas injections, headspace and pyrolysis.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Develop and provide technical and personal leadership in the area of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry.
  • Own and run long-term analytical competency projects targeting odor & volatiles characterization in accordance with our technical strategy. Develop and implement a wide range of GC methods with various detection and sample introduction techniques and develop methodologies supporting SABIC’s long-term vision
  • Develop and provide chemical characterization and problem solving expertise to support product development programs as well as addressing customer and manufacturing issue resolution needs.
  • Maintain contact with instrument vendors in the area of GC.
  • Propose and implement new instrumental techniques for our global Analytical Science lab(s) in order to better support the needs of our internal customers. Conceive, organize, and perform feasibility studies and final assessments.
  • Ensure equipment availability through timely maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Prepare written reports, presentations and operating procedures.
  • Drive discussions with internal customers regarding project planning and scoping as well as communicating conclusions.
  • Contribute to team activities in GC area and beyond
  • Develop automated methods of data analysis and representation / reporting
  • Initiate and drive safety and ergonomics improvements in the lab.
  • Participate in cross-functional and global safety, quality improvement and knowledge exchange programs.

MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience in gas chromatography and mass spectrometry is necessary and previous experience with odor related analysis is required.
  • Demonstrated detailed understanding of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry as well knowledge on interpretation of electron ionization (EI) mass spectra.
  • Bachelor and/or Master’s Degree/PhD in analytical chemistry is preferred. Technical Degree equivalent in an adjacent field such as polymer or petrochemical sciences or a closely related field with affinity to analytical chemistry and in particularly to gas chromatography/mass spectrometry will be considered.
  • Demonstrated expertise in GC and GC-MS via conference presentation and publications (internal / external) in this functional area.
  • The drive to develop and apply experience in new method development, maintenance and troubleshooting of analytical equipment on a daily basis.
  • Theoretical knowledge of other instrumental analysis techniques is required. Practical knowledge is preferred
  • Knowledge/understanding of petrochemicals and related processes is preferred.
  • Familiarity with MS Office (in particular Word and Excel®) and Agilent data processing software (especially MassHunter®) is preferred.
